Red Bull Drop Track, the first ever ski and snowboard contest at the famous Charlotte Pass road gap, took place on Monday 8 September 2014, with the sell-out event testing some of the world’s greatest skiers and snowboarders.

The road gap jump that drops over the main summer track up to Kosciusko has a long history of spring sessions for some of Australia’s and the world’s best skiers and snowboarders. Red Bull, together with a number of partners including Boreas, gave skiers and snowboarders from across the globe the opportunity to session the gap in a jam format contest.

The format of the event included two open jam sessions with competitors given the opportunity to attempt as many jumps as possible in the allocated times. Competitors were judged on skill, style and landing, with their top two scores recorded. The top five skiers and snowboarders then went through to a final jam session, before the winner of each discipline was announced.

The 45 riders who competed did not disappoint. Australian Olympic freestyle skier Russ Henshaw was the first to hit the morning open jam session, followed by snowboarder Clint Allan who first hit the gap at age 12The open jam session in the morning saw some impressive tricks thrown down; stylish and smooth corked 3’s from Russ Henshaw and Noah Morrison on skis, and cab 3’s from Clint Allan and Scotty James on the board. After the two sessions, the finalists were announced and the final one hour jam gave the top ten riders plenty of time to impress the judges.

Local skier Jordan Houghton landed some huge double front flips, and a Switch Kanga to score himself third place. In second place, Canadian Noah Morrison’s switch 1080 in the final was one of the highlights of the day. But it was Red Bull athlete, Elias Ambuhl from Switzerland who took out the ski event, closing out his final session with a super smooth double cork 1080 (and stomped a long way down the landing hill).

It was Australian two time Olympian Scotty James who dominated the snowboard event with a big frontside 1080 in the final, and backing up that score with smooth backside 720. Jeremy Page and Ryan Linnert (both from the USA) rounded out the podium with constant and stylish performances in the final.
